Shackleton
Speaking of Antarctica, in 1914 an expedition to reach to south pole led by
Shackleton with his ship Endurance creates an amazing story of survival.
Disaster struck when their ship was wrecked, trapped in ice, from then
on endured about 20 months of agony and hopelessness in the unbearably cold
icy Antarctica. Shackleton led the battle to keep them alive and stir them to not
break their spirit and to continue. He led his 27 crew to safety and not a single
soul perished.
'For sudden the worst turns the best to the brave.' -Shackleton's favorite
quotation from 'Prospice' by Robert Browning
'Put footstep of courage into stirrup of patience.' - from Shackleton's diary
while on the ice after abandoning Endurance, 19 Nov 1915
'We have done well under Providence up to now. Oh for a touch of dry
land under our feet.' - from Shackleton's diary, 9 Feb 1916
